Should Textbooks be Replaced by Laptops?: Leticia

Note: Some of these facts may be inaccurate - sources were not entirely reliable.

People now use laptops to replace TVs, books, information, and lots of other things - including textbooks. According to university professors, 85% of students will have an electronic device in class. Eventually, all of the 85% will use their technology inappropriately. These new, sleek, ultra-modern devices are rapidly replacing textbooks, and dilemmas are emerging. Students and computer companies like Apple want textbooks to be replaced by laptops in class, but some teachers and school boards are opposed. You may want laptops to become the new source of information, but I'll tell you why they shouldn't and show you some things you might not know.

Everyone wants good grades, right? They can help you get to a good university and later a good job. But think, a laptop in class is a whole world of disruptions. Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, and Netflix are suddenly available to be accessed. Students can play games, check their emails and chat, wasting valuable learning time. During their tests, they will be bewildered, since they didn't listen. They'll get bad grades that limit chances to a good university or college. Grades and the level of educationwill slump, and children that wasted their time will get bad jobs that won't help build the country.

Still not convinced? In addition to being disruptions, computers have short lives. The average computer will last 4 years, and constant use will shorten their brief lives. Planned obsolescence makes it so that computers crash and eventually need to be replaced. Imagine all of the time wasting fixing, updating, and buying new computers when books can last for years! Laptops also carry dangerous chemicals that poison the Earth and contribute to global warming, affecting the fragile food chain. There are 500 million computers in the world that end up harming the environment, slowly decaying in landfills. With schools using laptops that end up poisoning the Earth, the rate of global warming would skyrocket up! What's the point of closing coal mines to help the future generations if we're going to multiply our use of computers?

Lastly, thousands of dollars would be spent on computers. The average school has about 300-500 students. There are 100 million elementary schools in the world. On average, the world would spend 4 000, 000, 000 in elementary schools alone, if each child had a laptop! Cut that in half and it's still an enormous sum. This only lasts for 5 years! A math textbook costs 100 dollars or so, while a cheap laptop costs 300 dollars. Imagine the hundreds of thousands of dollars we'd save by buying textbooks! This money could be spent on better education and material, public health and transportation, and so many more things to ensure a high quality lifestyle.

Are we really going to spend this money on 5 year lasting laptops? We're endangering our future, poisoning the Earth, killing animals, making students more vulnerable to bad grades, helping people think they need laptops, and wasting money. We should invest these giant sums into better thins. This has to stop now, or we'll be in big trouble! Because of these reasons, I think laptops should not replace textbooks.

Yes. Laptops are proof of human brilliance. Textbooks are getting old, and you can't update information nearly as much! Information and facts get out of date and can't be updated onto something already printed.

    I absolutely agree with Leticia!
Textbooks may be getting old, but they still save us a lot of money and we're protecting our future. Do we want our children to grow up with bad grades and a dependency on technology? Nuh-uh!
Children are vulnerable and will accept whatever they have, like sponges that soak up water. If we raise them with this lifestyle, they will never be independent and won't think for themselves.

Very well stated, although both sides of the argument were not included.
Although textbooks are old-fashioned, they stick to the facts only and aren't a source of disruption in class. However, don't we still contaminate the Earth by using textbooks? We chop down trees and many chemicals are used to make paper white. Either way, we're still poisoning the Earth.
However, I think laptops should not replace textbooks. They contaminate even more! In this era, we choose the one that is less bad, not the best.

    I agree, Thomas.
Laptops are constant disruptions and now our world grows up in the market, not education. The people only have access to the market. We're not caring so much for education. It's all about buying and selling, buying and selling.

Very true and well thought out.
However, I disagree. Technology is advancing so rapidly, we have to keep up with it! It is poisoning our Earth, but we're fine so far and will be for some more time. Laptops may be disruptions, but children need to be educated and more disciplined. That's the root of the problem.

We need to keep in mind that our children and grandchildren will grow up in a world that is the consequence of our decisions. We don't want the future generations to grow up in a smelly, contaminated dump just because of our ignorance and regret!
The Earth is sacred and valuable. It's given us so much - why are we killing it off as I speak?

Children must learn not to be tempted by disruptions. The market has turned us into gullible people that bend in any direction. We don't think critically. Laptops are bad for the environment, but our children will solve those problems if they are raised properly. I'm willing to raise my kids properly, how about you?

So that's it, leave all of the problems to our kids when they grow up!
They'll figure it out, won't they? NOT! We need to be respectful to our Mother Earth and take care of her. I've done my best to raise my kids and they have grown into principled, well-mannered, respectful adults that look at everything critically. We are gullible, but the environment is our home and we will not trash it. People who support me, please comment!

    I agree with you, Willow

  12. Jacques, that is reasonable, and I agree.
I grew up with healthy fish in the rivers, with fresh, intact forests, with cleaner waters and clean air, but now I feel the smog and the tree stumps and the dead fish. It has a lot to do with the environment.

This comment is a pure result of the American model.
Ignorant to the environment, dependent on the market, undisciplined and unprincipled, with no care to the environment. We need to reject the North American model and lifestyle.

  16. Reality is jarring and it hurts!
We've gotta get used to it! We've been coddled far too long!

  17. Delilah5/25/2013

Well, ya, but we can say it in a nicer tone. Do you really think that people who are used to the North American lifestyle will accept your severe scoldings?
    No, you've gotta be persuasive.

  18. That's true, Delilah.
    Ur a born leader!!

  19. It's called planning ahead so we don't have any more future problems!
Problems are like weeds. We can find an early solution so they don't pop up in the future. We can deal with the ones we have now and the future ones. Heck, we've got 7 billion people on Earth who can make a difference!

    Yeah, Anna!!

  21. Absolutely true!
We have been known for planning ahead and solving problems before they come up.
We have to do our part to give our children a cleaner, safer, more environmentally-friendly home. Do we want them to grow up in a smog-filled, dump?

  22. Yeah !! I think it will be replaced in near future..
